The city has a mild climate due to warm offshore currentsamazing given the fact that it has the same latitude as Alaska and Greenland! St. Petersburg was officially made the new capital of Russia in 1712 and soon became famous internationally for its beautiful architecture, grand palaces, museums, theaters and universities. Subsequent rulers, Empress Elizabeth, Catherine the Great and Alexander I, commissioned splendid buildings which reflected European tastes and traditions and added to St. Petersburgs beauty. It is no wonder that writers, poets, artists, musicians and European "sophisticates" flocked to St. Petersburg eager to experience life in this grand and mysterious city.
